Essential Grooming Tools for Smooth & Short-Coated Dogs
Smooth and short-coated breeds may appear low-maintenance, but regular grooming is still essential for comfort, skin health, and reducing shedding. These breeds often shed consistently and can carry oils, dirt, and allergens on their skin—so the right tools make a big difference.
This guide outlines the core items we recommend for maintaining your smooth or short-coated dog between professional grooms.
Tools & Products
1. Rubber Curry Brush or Shedding Glove
For smooth coats, this is the number one “must-have.”
A rubber curry brush or rubber shedding glove:
-
Removes loose hair
-
Lifts dirt and dead skin
-
Stimulates circulation
-
Helps distribute natural oils
-
Dramatically reduces shedding at home
Use gentle circular motions 2–3 times per week. Most smooth-coated dogs absolutely love this step.
2. Bristle Brush
A bristle brush is ideal for smoothing and finishing after using the rubber curry. It helps:
-
Remove any remaining loose hairs
-
Promote shine
-
Give a clean, polished appearance
-
Spread natural oils across the coat
This tool is perfect for breeds such as Staffies, French Bulldogs, Dalmatians, Boxers, Whippets, and Vizslas.
Available as a Pure Boar Bristle Brush (ideal for smooth coats) and a Porcupine Brush (ideal for short and medium coats)
3. Optional: Comb (For Some Short Coats Only)
A comb is not essential for smooth coats and is often unnecessary for very short breeds.
However, for certain short-coated dogs with slightly longer furnishings—or if you want to perform detailed checks—an optional fine or extra fine tooth comb can be helpful for:
-
Checking for fleas or flea dirt
-
Inspecting the skin, especially in sensitive areas
-
Checking between toes, armpits, and groin
-
Removing debris caught in slightly longer feathering (if present)
If your dog’s coat is very smooth (e.g., Staffy, Frenchie, Whippet), you may not need a comb at all.
4. Grooming Wipes
Smooth-coated breeds can get oily or dusty between grooms. Grooming wipes are excellent for:
-
Daily freshening
-
Removing dirt after walks
-
Cleaning belly, armpits, paws, and groin
-
Muzzle fold maintenance for brachycephalic breeds
This helps keep the coat clean without overwashing.

5. Grooming Spray / Light Coat Conditioner
Even short coats benefit from a conditioning spray. A light grooming spray (like Plush Puppy OMG or TLC) helps:
-
Reduce static
-
Add shine
-
Loosen light dirt and dander
-
Make brushing more comfortable
-
Freshen the coat between baths
Use a light mist before brushing—never brush any coat type completely dry.
How Often Should Smooth & Short-Coated Dogs Be Groomed?
A simple routine goes a long way:
-
Brushing: 2–3 times per week (daily during heavy shedding periods)
-
Wipe-downs: As needed after walks or play
-
Nail care: Every 3–4 weeks
-
Bathing: Every 4–8 weeks depending on lifestyle and skin needs
Regular grooming reduces shedding, improves skin health, and keeps your dog feeling comfortable.
Final Thoughts
Smooth and short-coated dogs are wonderfully easy to care for—but only when you have the right tools and routine. With just a couple of quality grooming items, you can dramatically reduce shedding, support healthy skin, and keep your dog looking and feeling their absolute best.
