Fear-Free Dog Grooming FAQs | Spitz Groom

Fear-Free Grooming

What does Fear-Free Grooming mean at Spitz Groom?

Fear-Free Grooming means we focus on reducing fear, anxiety and stress wherever possible, rather than expecting every dog to simply tolerate grooming.

Our approach considers the individual dog, their body language, previous experiences and comfort level throughout the appointment.

Are Spitz Groom’s groomers qualified in Fear Free grooming?

Yes. Our groomers have completed the Fear Free Grooming Course, providing them with specialised knowledge and practical techniques to help reduce fear, anxiety and stress throughout the grooming process.

Spitz Groom is also a member of Fear Free, a globally recognised organisation dedicated to improving the emotional wellbeing of animals through compassionate, evidence-based handling and care.

Does Fear-Free Grooming mean my dog doesn’t have to be restrained?

No.

Safe grooming sometimes requires appropriate restraint. The difference is that we use handling and restraint thoughtfully and appropriately, rather than relying on force or intimidation.

Our goal is to achieve the necessary grooming while keeping the dog’s emotional and physical wellbeing at the forefront.

What if my dog is scared of grooming?

Please tell us before the appointment.

Fear isn’t bad behaviour, and your dog isn’t being difficult deliberately. Grooming involves unfamiliar people, handling, noises, water, dryers and equipment, all within a relatively unusual environment.

We’ll work with your dog’s individual tolerance and may modify the grooming process where appropriate.

What if my dog won’t tolerate the entire groom?

We may need to change the grooming plan.

For some dogs, completing every part of a traditional groom in one appointment isn’t realistic. We may prioritise essential grooming, shorten the service, introduce breaks or recommend a gradual grooming program.

Sometimes the most successful groom is the one that leaves the dog feeling safe enough to come back.

Can Fear-Free Grooming help puppies?

Absolutely. In fact, starting positive grooming experiences early is one of the best things you can do for a puppy.

Early visits can introduce puppies to handling, brushing, bathing, drying, nail care and grooming equipment in a controlled and positive environment.

The objective isn’t to make a puppy endure everything immediately. It’s to build confidence over time.

What should I tell you if my dog has bitten or tried to bite a groomer before?

Please tell us. Always.

There’s no judgement. Knowing about previous incidents allows us to assess the risks and determine whether we can safely accommodate your dog.

The same applies to fear, anxiety, reactivity, resource guarding, sensitivity to handling or previous traumatic grooming experiences.

Honesty helps us keep everyone safe, including your dog.
